On completion of training, successful learners should be able to understand the role of the paediatric first aider assisting infants and children including reference to:

  • the importance of preventing cross infection
  • the need for recording incidents and actions
  • administer first aid to a casualty who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • administer first aid to a casualty who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
  • administer first aid to a casualty with minor injuries
  • administer first aid to a casualty with injuries to bones, joints and muscles
  • administer first aid to a casualty with head and spinal injuries
  • administer first aid to a casualty with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
  • administer first aid to a casualty with sickle cell anaemia, diabetes, asthma, allergies, meningitis and febrile seizures
  • administer first aid to a casualty experiencing the effects of extreme hot or cold
  • administer first aid to a casualty who has sustained an electric shock
  • administer first aid to a casualty with burns or scalds
  • administer first aid to a casualty who has been poisoned
  • administer first aid to a casualty who has been bitten or stung
  • administer first aid to a casualty in anaphylaxis
